New School

This is the major item of news for Dorothy Goodman this year, and yet I have very little to tell you. I was a little surprised by this when I thought about it, but the reason in fact is that everything at the moment is going very well and is on schedule. No news is good news, as they say!

We have had a lot of discussions about a whole range of subjects, from hoists to computers to the number of clocks we need in the school and the siting of the school minibus (which is not as straightforward as it sounds!) – but all of them are being resolved smoothly. So at the moment everything looks good!

I will, though, make three further comments.
  • Firstly, it is thanks to the great efforts of Cecilia Mitchell that we have begun to have good inclusion links with Redmoor. This will be extremely helpful to us as we move on to the new site, and there will be many opportunities to take advantage of in the years to come. A small example of this was at the recent Sports Day, held at Redmoor. We asked for offers of help from the students there, and the teachers were inundated – everyone wanted to take part. In the end we had 14 students, and they were wonderful – helping with the games and mixing with our children. This to me is what inclusion is about – it is not all about being in classrooms together.

  • Secondly, I know that everyone wants to know about the 14-19 section of the school, and of course so do we! Unfortunately I have no news for you. As you know, what happens is not up to us – it is the responsibility of the Local Education Authority – and at the moment I have no information at all. The only thing I do know is that if we have not sorted out the site by September 2006 (and it seems unlikely that we will do now) then the 14-19 students can stay on the current Dorothy Goodman site. We have been told that categorically.

  • And finally – a word about fund-raising, because we are beginning to think seriously about equipment and resources now. I know that the money allocated by the Local Authority is very generous, and it is more than was allocated in Melton. But it won’t buy everything. We want the best for our children, and so we will have to raise some money to pay for it. Areas that we are looking at particularly include:

    • Two conservatories – additional requirements of the school.
    • Outdoor play equipment (because we will have space at last, and so we want to use it well).
    • Sensory Room and Softplay – to make sure we get the best and most up-to-date resources.
I would ask you to bear this in mind over the coming 12 months – this is a big year for us, and we want to make it a successful one!

Have a wonderful summer, everyone,

Tony Smith
